Global supply chain security risks due to natural disasters or man-made hazards are highlighted, and there is an urgent need for a systematic and coordinated solution. Therefore, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has developed the ISO28000 series of standards for the potential security incidents of people, goods, infrastructure, equipment and equipment delivery methods to anticipate the potential disruptive effects in the supply chain, with the ultimate goal of improving the overall security of the supply chain.

ISO28000 is compatible with ISO9001 quality systems and ISO14001 environmental systems to help integrate quality systems, environmental systems and supply chain safety management systems within an organization.
